NSW Rego Fees to be Cut
The NSW government plans to cut high cost of keeping a caravan on the road as part of sweeping changes to the registration system.
A proposed shake-up of the NSW vehicle registration system could cut the cost of registering a caravan in that state, which boasts some of the highest RV rego fees in Australia.
A caravan over 2.5 tonnes currently costs $449 to register in NSW, compared to around $175 in Queensland and less than $50 in Victoria.
NSW Road Minister Duncan Gay recently announced what he calls “the biggest proposed changes to light vehicle registration in NSW in 90 years”.
The proposed changes would encourage motorists to drive vehicles with high safety standards as determined by the ANCAP safety rating system.
“(They) would also recognise cleaner vehicles, safer motorcycles and would also reduce registration charges for most caravans and light trailers,” he said.
“It currently costs more to register caravans in NSW than in other states. A new charging system to reduce caravan registration costs would also acknowledge they are generally used much less on NSW roads than regular passenger vehicles.”
Caravans are currently subject to the same ‘weight tax’ as motor vehicles in NSW, despite being used significantly less. The Government proposes to change the way caravan registration fees are determined to a ‘base fee’ plus a ‘cost per kg’ charge, to make the system fairer.
There are approximately 279,000 caravans registered in NSW.

Jayco Newcastle Weekend Away – March 2014
Last weekend (28th & 29th March 2014) Jayco Newcastle took a group of regular customers and staff away for a weekend to the NRMA Beach Holiday Park at Umina Beach.
When we got there on Friday evening it was absolutely pouring and we had fears that the entire weekend would be washed out. We were determined not to let the rain dampen our spirits and so we took over the games room and had nibblies, pizza & Indian. We were even joined at our site by some furry visitors!
The next day we awoke to overcast weather, but were very happy that the rain seemed to be holding off. Before we knew it the sun was shining and the kids (and some suspiciously large kids) were able to enjoy the jumping pillows and play equipment. Soon it was really hot and everyone headed to the pool and water park to cool off. The facilities were wonderful and everyone enjoyed the water slide.
Later that afternoon everyone met around Damian’s Sterling and set up camp for the evening. It was such a large group but we managed to fit everyone in. We put on a BBQ and lots of people had brought potato bake, salads, nibblies and goodies to go with it. It was quite a feast and no one went hungry, especially when we finished with ice cream & cheesecake for desert. Some of the kids got more ice cream on their faces than in their mouths!
The next morning people started to pack up to go home and Warwick even tag tested all of the customers leads. After such a great weekend it was a bit sad saying goodbye, as after a weekend of chatting, eating, drinking and fun, most of our customers left as friends and possible future travel companions. There were many people at the weekend with various backgrounds and so there was a wealth of knowledge that was able to be shared around.
The general feedback on the weekend was that it was great for people to be able to spend time with like minded individuals who share the same passion for caravanning. It was also wonderful as staff to be able to spend some time together outside of work and get to know each other on a more personal level. It was also a great lesson in caravanning for some of the novice staff as this was their first time away in a van!
All in all it was another very successful weekend away and we look forward to having another one in the future!
